Circles Grey or Black These are due to pigmented cells in the openings of hair follicles. In lentigo maligna they are due to single cell proliferation of atypical melanocytes into the ostium of the follicle and down the infundibulum. The circles are usually a uniform curved line. In the other conditions the circles are made up of a series of grey dots of melanin in keratinocytes.
From a clinical point of view a lentigo maligna is smooth on the surface whereas the others are rough.
